Dr. Polk became a lifetime chiropractic patient and future chiropractor himself after witnessing the enormous impact chiropractic had on his younger brother early in the second year of his brother’s life. While suffering severe chronic asthma and many other health issues his brother dealt with at the time, chiropractic was tried as a last-resort option and proved to be the only treatment to provide relief. Suffering asthmatic respiratory difficulties since birth, Dr. Polk’s brother spent most of the hours in his day breathing from a machine. He would not eat. He didn’t sleep. He couldn’t put on weight. He wasn’t growing hair. His eyesight was so bad that he had bifocal glasses before he could crawl. He cried all the time and his respiration sounded terrible.
Chiropractic was tried, only after every other physician in town had been consulted and none had offered any help. Dr. Polk’s mother begrudgingly took his younger brother to a chiropractor she had met in her Lamaze class. She didn’t believe in chiropractic and may have even had a negative opinion. But she was desperate and she knew the chiropractor’s children were healthy. The turnaround in his brother’s health was enormous and rapid after he began treatment. He immediately began to eat more, cry less, and breathe better. He began to sleep and grow more like a normal baby. Within a matter of months the Polks threw that breathing machine away. Chiropractic changed the lives of the Polk family forever and Dr. Polk knew what he wanted to do with his life.
